Some of the best moments in life happen when we stray from the beaten path—when we allow ourselves to wander and discover. Tonight, on my way home from work, I decided to take a slightly different route than usual. It was a simple decision, almost an afterthought, but one I’m now so grateful for.
Where I live, the Shubenacadie River is a haven for eagles. They’re majestic creatures, always a treat to spot. The challenge, though, is finding more than one at a time. It’s like nature’s version of a treasure hunt—catching sight of these magnificent birds perched high above or soaring effortlessly through the sky.
Tonight, the river offered up something truly special. As I rounded a curve in the road, I saw them—a gathering of eagles! It was as if they’d chosen this spot to congregate and share their own secrets of the world. Though they were a fair distance away, it was unmistakably a group of these awe-inspiring birds, their silhouettes striking against the fading light of dusk.
I stopped for a moment, just to take it all in. Even from afar, their presence was humbling. They remind me of how vast and interconnected the natural world is, and how lucky we are to witness even a small part of it.
Moments like these reignite my passion for photography. While my camera wasn’t equipped for such a long-range capture tonight, it inspired me to plan future outings with my gear ready for unexpected wonders like this.
Taking the long way home turned out to be the best decision I made all day. It’s a reminder to slow down, to explore, and to embrace the beauty that’s often hiding just around the corner. Who knows what tomorrow will bring? Perhaps another unexpected encounter—or an opportunity to capture it in its full glory.
